The strong development of the settlement of Glattbrugg largely displaced the name Oberhausen in the 20th century and is now as common as the name Opfikon. To distinguish the political municipality of Opfikon from the village of Opfikon, the name Opfikon-Glattbrugg is often used for the former. Since the turn of the millennium, the settlement areas of the city of Zurich and those of the municipality of Opfikon in the Glattpark and Glattbrugg area have been growing together.
Opfikon is not only attractive as a place to work and because of its favorable traffic situation: the municipality has an extremely low tax burden. The population has risen sharply in recent years. In 2006, just under 13,000 inhabitants were registered - twelve years later, the 20,000 mark was exceeded. Opfikon is one of the largest cities in the Canton of Zurich.
